Altona

The house is located in central Malmö, a 12-15 minute walk (or 4 minute bus ride) from the central station. We are close to the sea: ~30 minute walk or 12 minute bike ride to the nearest beach. This is a four-storey house and the elevator does not go to the top most floor. Some bathrooms are shared by two people. The sun rises very early during summer, so make sure to close your curtains well! If you are very sensitive to the light, perhaps you want to consider bringing a sleep mask.

Location:Södra Promenaden 61, Malmö 21138, Sweden.

Travel Directions:

To get to Altona from Copenhagen Airport, we usually recommend the train+bus option, which is very convenient (and cheaper).

By train+bus: Take the train from the airport to Malmö Central Station (third stop, ~25 minutes). The train platform is inside the airport (there are two platforms, make sure you are on the one towards Sweden). Once you arrive at Malmö Central Station, take either bus 5 or 32 which leave from Position A (right in front of the main entrance) to Studentgatan (2 stops, 4 minutes). The bus stop is right across the street from Altona. The same ticket for the train is also valid for the bus.

Buying the train ticket: you can either buy a train ticket at the machines in the airport or via the Skånetrafiken app. Via the app you can buy for more than one person, and if you are at least two people and buy together you get a 25% discount. To buy the ticket via the app, you can search for directions from Copenhagen airport to Malmö Central station, choose any of the time options (it is irrelevant which one), and then "select ticket" and buy "single ticket". You can buy the ticket in advance and then activate it before you get on the train. You will need to register a phone number and save your credit card information the first time you buy via the app. You need internet connection in order to activate and show your ticket: if you don't have mobile data it is possible to connect to the train's wifi network. A single ticket costs 135 sek (ca £10).

By taxi: Taxis are somewhat expensive here and crossing the bridge increases the price. Google says the typical price from the airport to Malmö would be 1200 sek, but some taxi companies (like https://taximalmo.se/) charge 850 sek for a minibus (up to 8 people). We do not have much experience with such taxis, so we cannot recommend any particular taxi company.

Clothes: There will be cleaning tasks during the annual course. Weather in Malmö during summer can vary quite a bit, so the suggestion is to be prepared! It can be windy, it sometimes rains, there can be some more chilly days/evenings, and it can also (hopefully!) be warm and sunny, sometimes around 25oC. Places for excursions include cities, beaches and hikes in national parks. Copenhagen is only a 40-minute train ride away.

Public transportation works very well here. The best way to search for bus/train routes and to buy tickets is via the Skånetrafiken app . You will need to register a phone number and a credit card to be able to buy tickets via the app and you need an internet connection in order to show your ticket. The app is very self-explanatory (there are several different types of tickets: single ticket, 24-hour ticket, and others; one person can buy for several people travelling together in the same app and in that case there is a 25% discount).

Payment details:

You will receive an invoice, in due course, to the email account that you have given to nwestudies.org. It will have all the information you need to pay for the course. We will let you know closer to the time how much you will need to calculate for outings, car, petrol etc.
